This new book in rhyme tells the story of a cruelly mistreated mongrel as depicted in the original 1894 novel, Beautiful Joe, a timeless and universally loved book by Margaret Marshall Saunders. This became Canada’s first book to sell one million copies.
By 1934, the book had sold seven million copies world-wide in fourteen languages including Japanese, Dutch, French, German, Chinese, Spanish, Esperanto and Braille.
This sweet, concise, and heartrending poem will delight both lovers of the original story and those being introduced to Beautiful Joe for the first time.
Young and old alike will be touched by the love between a grateful rescued dog and the family who loves him inspite of his appearance.

9/11 Dog Monument in Beautiful Joe Park
In 2002, the Beautiful Joe Heritage Society unveiled two gigantic plinths of Bruce Peninsula ledgerock to represent the World Trade Center Twin Towers. One column of the monument is dedicated to all 9/11 Search and Rescue Dogs and the other column is dedicated to NY/NJ Port Authority Police Department K-9, dog, Sirius.
The Yellow Labrador was the only dog to perish in the tragedy. His partner, Constable David Lim and Inspector Gene Ceccarelli traveled to Meaford, Ontario for the somber ceremony. An iron cross cut from a girder from Ground Zero debris was brought from NYC to be attached to the monument. This moving ceremony was preceded by a procession of Ontario Provincial Police Canine Units from across the province, the Commissioner's Pipe and Drum Band, members of the Canadian Armed Forces, the U.S. Consulate General and other dignitaries. |
